He was appointed by the Authority following an extensive recruitment process to shortlist from the original 18 applicants. For the first time, this involved a completely external selection panel, which included representatives from business, a borough council and the Home Office. Terry takes over from Anne Wright, who is stepping down from the Authority after four years.

Chair of Hertfordshire Police Authority, Stuart Nagler, said: "There was a very strong field of candidates and I would like to congratulate Terry on his appointment. His wide range of skills, knowledge and experience will be of enormous benefit to the Authority and I look forward to working with him. I would also like to thank Anne for all her contributions to the Authority, in particular her work with our Independent Custody Visitors."

Terry holds a number of posts in both the commercial and public sectors. He is a member of the Legal Services Board, a non-Executive Director of the Financial Services Compensation Scheme Limited and Senior Independent Director of the Henderson Private Equity Investment Trust plc. He is also involved in consultancy work on strategy, investment and change programmes and is a Trustee for the Africa Educational Trust.

He began his career as an investment analyst in the City and, following the death of Robert Maxwell, was appointed to the Board of Mirror Group plc as Group Development Director.

Following the sale of the Mirror Group to Trinity International in 2000, Terry left to take up a number of appointments in both the commercial and public sectors.

"Hertfordshire is one of the top performing police forces in the country and I am delighted to have this opportunity to work with a first class Constabulary and Authority and look forward to the challenges that lie ahead," said Terry.

He has a BA (Hons) and MA in Politics and, together with his wife and three children, Terry, 54, has lived in Much Hadham for 15 years.
