Hertfordshire Police Authority and Constabulary Work Together to Tackle Theft of Metal
Hertfordshire Police Authority and Constabulary today launch a campaign to tackle theft of metal as a result of recent increases
The incidents being investigated by the Constabulary range from thefts of cabling for telephone lines, power lines and transport networks, catalytic converters, manhole covers, lead from church roofs, and other items to be sold on for scrap including bikes and tools.
In a twin-track approach, the Police Authority is calling for tougher sentencing of those prosecuted for theft of metal, as the Constabulary works with local partners in a new approach to prevent incidents, catch those responsible and build better relationships with local scrap metal merchants.
David Lloyd, Chairman of Hertfordshire Police Authority said “The Police Authority has been closely monitoring trends of crime in Hertfordshire, and has become concerned by the increase in this particular type of theft. Whilst I am confident that the Constabulary are actively pursuing all courses of action together with local partners and businesses, it is important that the whole criminal justice system is capable of responding appropriately.
It does not seem right to me that individuals and organised groups who cause significant disruption to individuals, businesses and communities end up with such light sentences as a result of sentencing guidelines not properly recognising the impact of the crimes.
Appropriate punishments should both act as a deterrent to criminals, and give confidence to the law-abiding majority that the whole criminal justice system is on their side.
The Police Authority and the Constabulary are determined that through working together we can reduce the occurrence of this malevolent crime.”
